Tsuyoshi Maekawa

Tsuyoshi Maekawa (1936, Japan)
Born in Osaka in 1936. Tsuyoshi Maekawa became a member of the Gutai group in 1962. Maekawa, Takesada Matsutani and Shuji Mukai were known as the 3M, and became a core presence among 2nd generation Gutai artists. Maekawa glued, tore and sewed burlap fabric to create a bumpy relief surface that he used to make artworks with a visceral materiality. While Gutai artists had developed a strong inclination towards abstract expressionism, Tsuyoshi Maekawa was focused on the material presence of his objects.
