Hiroshi Senju

Hiroshi Senju (1958-, Japan)
The internationally celebrated artist Hiroshi Senju is famously known for his radical adaptation of traditional Japanese painting techniques with abstract forms of art. In his signature series `Waterfall`, the artist successfully transformed materiality of natural pigments to a passage of time which reflects immortal aesthetic of water as the origin of life. Waterfall series deliver the timeless quality that crosses the cultural boundaries. The beauty of contrasts between Eastern and Western cultures and nature, light and shadow, disappearance and regeneration are brilliantly presented as a new visual language in human-scale. The series of works always deliver sensational encounter with our world that is consisted of perpetually flowing water which evokes restlessly repeating moments of life.

In 1995, the artist became the first Asian artist who received an Honorable Mention Award at the Venice Biennale. Since then he has participated in exhibitions around the world, including the Beauty Project at the London Museum of Contemporary Art in 1996; The New Way of Tea, curated by Alexandra Munroe, at the Japan Society in New York in 2002; and Paintings on Fusuma, at the Tokyo National Museum in 2003. He completed seventy-seven murals at the Annex of Daitokuji-Jyukoin, a prominent Zen Buddhist temple in Japan.

He was appointed as the art director for the renovation project at the Haneda Airport Terminal in Tokyo in 2004, where he also installed a large-scale 'Waterfall' painting at the entrance. The Benesse Art Site of Naoshima Island, designed by Tadao Ando, also houses two large-scale installations. Senju’s work is in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles; The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama, Japan; Yamatane Museum of Art in Tokyo; The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music; and the Kushiro Art Museum, Hokkaido, Japan.

The Hiroshi Senju Museum, designed by Ryue Nishizawa, opened in 2011 in Karuizawa, Japan. Hiroshi Senju was president of Kyoto University of Art & Design from 2007 to 2013, presently professor of Kyoto University of Art & Design, president of joint education system of Kyoto University of Art & Design and Tohoku University of Art & Design, member of masters committee of L'ÉCOLE of Van Cleef & Arpels, and advisor of The Tokugawa Museum.

In 2015, Senju`s large scale work was displayed at the exhibition `Frontiers Reimagined` during the 56th Venice Biennale. The artist lives and works in New York City.
