Founded in 1967 in the heart of Tokyo, Whitestone Gallery is one of the pioneering galleries in Japan. The gallery presents works of significance by modern and contemporary Japanese artists and estates including members of Gutai Art Association.
With the opening of the Karuizawa New Art Museum in 2012, the gallery saw an exciting new development. Designed by renowned Japanese architect Rikuo Nishimori, the museum is used for a series of innovative Japanese Modern and Contemporary Art exhibitions, as well as public programs and educational activities.
In 2015, the gallery`s first overseas operation opened in Hong Kong aiming to introduce roster of living Gutai artists and Contemporary Japanese artists to an international audience, and to create a dialogue of exchange between Japan and the rest of the world. The Hong Kong gallery hosting a series of survey exhibitions of former Gutai artists who are still active since its inception. The exhibitions are accompanied by fully illustrated catalogues, artist talks and educational programs regarding post-war avant-garde art.
